. mitt romney holds rallies in both ohio and iowa. and i want to take another look at those two polls that everyone is talking about this morning. they seem to paint different pictures of this race. the pew research center gives mitt romney a four-point lead over president obama. 49% to 45%. that survey did include more likely voters who identify themselves as republicans. however, the latest gallup tracking poll has president obama leading mitt romney 50% to 45%. this poll does include voters who were surveyed before the presidential debate which most voters say romney won though interestingly enough, it showed movement toward obama yesterday. all right. hard to keep track of. there's a lot going on here. cnn political reporter peter hamby joins us live from washington. please, peter, make sense of this for us. >> okay. these are the first two real credible polls we've seen since the debate. the bottom line here is there's movement in both toward mitt romney. you're right. the gallup poll had about three days of sampling before the debate that showed obama winning. after the debate,

both before and after the debate and nationally in gallup's daily tracking poll which covers october 2nd through the 8th, mitt romney now holds a two point edge. today, gallup shifted from registered to likely voters, which tends to favor republicans. that said, though, it is hard to find any evidence, any evidence that president obama escaped denver without at least some damage. the only question being how severe and how long-lasting. that seems hard to dispute. just as it's hard to dispute that prior to the debate, mr. romney was getting hammered in the polls. keeping them honest though, disputing or downplaying the obvious, that's what campaigns do on both sides. >> it's not going to be about the polls. >> i wouldn't put a lot of weight in any of these national polls for the next cuouple days. >> in terms of mitt romney surging, just remember how much of a deficit he had to make up. he was in some cases double digits behind the president in all those attributes. >> pull back the reins. >> the media is focusing on one poll. >> that's reaction to the recent batch of polling, including

. mitt romney and barack obama both supported, in the heat, in the flash of the financial crisis stepping in and backstopping the banks. what mitt romney took issue are are certain provisions within dodd-frank that actually institutionalized too big to fail. they actually declare certainly financial institutions as systemically important financial institutions, meaning if they get into trouble again, the taxpayers are on the hook. that's the financial plan that barack obama supports, and that's the one that mitt romney took issue to. and when romney said that to him on the stage, how does this help our economy that the federal government now has this implicit guarantee to support the banks? the president had no answer. he said mitt romney just wants to let wall street run wild. that's not what he said. he supports responsible regulation. again, the president didn't have a response. >> so we have vice presidential debate coming up. our good friend, paul ryan, is going to be debating against our other good friend, joe biden. >> joe biden is the best. >> we're just saying what a great americ
